Holidaymakers and second home owners who are caught travelling to Brean, Berrow or Burnham-On-Sea for the Easter bank holiday weekend could be fined and refused entry, police have warned.
Police say their officers are patrolling roads across the area to ensure the Government’s lockdown measures are followed to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
The warning appears to have been heeded as traffic cameras at Burnham-On-Sea’s M5 junction showed a quiet scene on Good Friday, a traditionally busy day, as pictured here.
Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun said: “Along with Visit Somerset and other local authorities, Sedgemoor is urging people not to travel to Somerset, despite the glorious and tempting weather.”
“This also applies to second/holiday home owners too. Sedgemoor’s beautiful countryside and coast will still be here when the virus has long gone and we will be delighted to see you then.”
“Before the long weekend, Sedgemoor staff have been reminding owners of hotels, bed and breakfasts, hostels, holiday rentals, campsites and guest houses, that they remain closed this Easter to help combat coronavirus. The message is clear – stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.”
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman adds: “We’d like to say thank you to everyone observing social distancing measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus and save lives. This weekend consider whether your journey is essential. Unless necessary, stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
The warning comes after figures reveal that 7,978 people have now died from coronavirus across the UK. There have been over 150 cases of Coronavirus in Somerset.
People are being urged to follow the rules and stay indoors in order to delay the spread of the virus and ease the pressure on the NHS.
