Burnham-On-Sea MP witnessed ‘absolute inferno’ on M5 motorway

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP Tessa Munt told the House of Commons last night how she was a horrified witness of the “absolute inferno” following the fatal M5 crash on Friday.

She was travelling south on the motorway when the incident happened on the opposite carriageway.

During a statement she told MPs: “I was actually present at the time on the southbound carriageway and saw what had actually happened as I was driving off to go on to the Taunton junction.”

“I don’t think I have ever seen anything like what I saw on Friday evening. It was an absolute inferno and it was impossible for me to leave the car on the southbound carriageway to do anything.”

She praised the efforts of local people who bravely “took their part in rescuing people from the vehicles.”

34 vehicles – which included six articulated lorries – were involved in the collision, which closed the M5 in both directions between junctions 24 and 25.

A total of 7 people died and 51 people were injured in the vehicles, many of which burst into flames.

The accident occurred on Friday at 8.25pm and numerous emergency crews were in attendance – including fire, police, ambulance and St John Ambulance teams from Burnham-On-Sea.
