M5 re-opens at Burnham-On-Sea after three car accident

-

The M5 at Burnham-On-Sea was closed for over an hour on Friday afternoon (May 7th) after a three-vehicle accident.

Fire, police and ambulance crews rushed to the southbound carriageway between junctions 22 at Burnham and 23 at Highbridge at 2.45pm.

A female occupant of one of the cars was trapped in her vehicle and had to be cut free by the fire crews using specialist cutting equipment.

Fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The trapped female was not physically trapped but the crews still needed to hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof to extricate her on a spinal board. The casualty was then handed over to ambulance.”

Police spokesman Wayne Baker told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “One person was cut free from a vehicle and taken to Musgrove Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.”

He added that the motorway was closed for almost 70 minutes while the carriageway was cleared and emergency services were at the scene.

The incident led to long queues of traffic in the area as motorists sought alternative routes around the accident.
