Both carriageways were shut between junction 21 at Weston and junction 22 at Burnham to allow an air ambulance to land.
A police spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A 49 year-old male and a 48-year-old woman were seriously injured in the accident.”
“The male was taken to Frenchay hospital and the lady to Weston General.”
