Police closed the southbound carriageway of the M5 near Burnham-On-Sea early today (Sunday, October 31st) after a serious accident.
Police and other emergency services were called to the M5 at 3am after the single vehicle accident occurred between junctions 22 at Burnham and 21 at Weston during the early hours of this morning.
The only car involved in the incident left the carriageway, ending up on its side with the driver trapped inside next to the cliff-face.
The man inside, aged in his 30s, was freed using hydraulic cutting equipment, and he was taken to hospital with neck, back and abdominal injuries.
Police spokesman Wayne Baker confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “One vehicle left the carriageway, leaving a person with serious injuries.”
Investigations are underway into what happened and anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The southbound carriageway partially re-opened at 8.30am.
