This was the scene on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea this morning (Monday May 17th) when a lorry crashed through the central reservation and ended up facing the wrong way on the opposite carriageway.
Incredibly, the lorry driver narrowly missed several oncoming vehicles at a busy time of day and managed to avert a major accident.
Emergency services rushed to the southbound carriageway near Burnham’s junction 22 at 9.40am when the lorry flattened the central reservation barrier, as pictured.
The lorry careered off the northbound carriageway into the oncoming southbound traffic – but fortunately no vehicles were struck.
Ambulance spokesman Dave Rogers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The man driving the lorry was treated at the scene by ambulance crews and was taken to Musgrove Hospital in Taunton.”
Police said the outside lane of the carriageway was closed throughout the morning while debris was cleared from the motorway, the lorry was removed and an investigation began.
Police spokeswoman Cath Foster added: “It’s unclear what caused the lorry to go through the central reservation – our investigation is underway.”
A passenger in a passing vehicle captured the scenes on camera and sent these photos to Burnham-On-Sea.com.
