Motorist air-lifted to hospital after car leaves M5 near Burnham

-

A motorist had to be air-lifted to hospital on Thursday evening (July 8th) after his car careered off the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea.

These were the scenes on the M5 motorway just north of Sedgemoor Services at 6pm when five fire crews were called to deal with the incident.

Two fire engines from Bridgwater, two from Weston, and a further rescue tender from Weston were sent to the scene after the car ended up in a roadside ditch.

A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “One car left the carriageway and went down into a water-filled ditch.”

“One male casualty was released by the fire service using cutting gear, and conveyed to hospital via air ambulance.”

The air ambulance is understood to have taken the man to Frenchay hospital for further treatment.

The accident led to long queues of traffic going southbound between Weston’s junction 21 and Burnham’s junction 22.
