Burnham loyalty card plans get cautious welcome from traders

-

Plans to introduce a shopping loyalty card in Burnham-On-Sea in order to boost business in the town centre are to be further investigated, it was decided this week.

Members of the town’s Chamber of Trade gave a cautious welcome to the proposed scheme at their meeting on Tuesday evening (October 20th).

The card scheme’s organiser, Tony Deahl of the Friends of Burnham War Memorial Hospital, explained how the card, which would cost £5-10 per year, would encourage shoppers to buy in town by offering discounts of around five per cent.

“Charity donations are hard to come by and legacies difficult to get at the moment, so a scheme like this would generate additional income for us and provide extra customers for your businesses,” Tony told the meeting.

However, several businesses are concerned that they do not earn high enough profit margins to offer further reductions. Also, there were concerns aired at Tuesday’s meeting regarding data protection, whether NHS funding should be raised in this way, and whether enough shops would participate to make it worthwhile.

Chamber of Trade Deputy Chairman Tom Ashton is to work with Mr Deahl to further investigate the potential of the scheme. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported on the plans earlier this month.
