Burnham-On-Sea ‘green’ schools project wins lottery funding boost

-

A new project to encourage children across the Burnham-On-Sea area to get into gardening has received a £3,000 boost from the National Lottery this week.

Burnham In Bloom, which oversees the town’s entry into the annual Britain In Bloom competition, has been given the funding for the new scheme.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Chairman Dave Perrett, pictured, said he’s “delighted” the group has been awarded £3,000 by the Big Lottery Fund.

“We are really pleased – it will enable us to launch a new project to get more young people involved in brightening up our local commnunity,” he said.

“The new ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards’ scheme will be launched in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge to encourage schools to run their own gardening clubs with local children.”

He added: “We will be able to supply seeds, compost and some gardening equipment to local schools to get young people started.”

“We will be talking to local schools across the Burnham-On-Sea area to find out what projects they would like to do and how much involvement they want.”

He added that the funding will enable the project to last for several years.

Burnham In Bloom was among 15 Burnham-On-Sea groups that competed for lottery grants in January by presenting their case to an audience at The Princess Theatre before spectators and judges cast their votes for the groups to win the money.

While the group did not win funding on the night in January, it has just received a letter saying that it has, in fact, been successful after all and will get the full grant funding that it wants to run the new scheme.
