Burnham-On-Sea’s M5 northbound exit slip road was closed for many hours on Tuesday (March 27th) following a lorry breakdown.
Highways England made the initial decision to shut the nortbound exit road at junction 22 for Burnham-On-Sea at 3.30pm.
A spokesman explained to Burnham-On-Sea.com that the location of the HGV at the top of the sliproad, where the lanes merge, meant it would not have been safe to divert traffic around it.
“The vehicle required specialist recovery due to its size and because of this the slip road had to be closed,” added Highways England.
Motorists were advised to leave the motorway via the nortbound exit road at junction 23 instead.
It caused additional traffic to travel along the A38 through Highbridge to reach Burnham, causing queues at peak times.
