Exclusive: Rock thrown from bridge damages Highbridge man’s lorry

-

A Highbridge lorry driver is lucky to have escaped injury after a rock was thrown at his vehicle from a motorway bridge, smashing his windscreen as he drove along the M5.

Simon Triggol, right, was driving from Birmingham to Burnham-On-Sea during the early hours of Saturday (March 3rd) when the rock, which was about the size of a fist, was thrown at his lorry.

It came through the windscreen, shattering the glass, before striking his arm. A three inch wide hole was left in the window by the missile.

Incredibly, Simon escaped injury besides some painful bruising and a bit of shock.

This week, the Highbridge man, who drives night freight lorries, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I know I’ve been very lucky here. The rock narrowly missed my face and hit my left arm. It really shook me up, but it could have been far more serious.”

“I was travelling at around 55mph at the time, so the impact of the stone was substantial.”

The 3am incident occurred on the southbound carriageway near junction 4 of the M5 motorway near Bromsgrove in the West Midlands.

Simon added: “Because it was early morning, there was no other traffic using the bridge above the motorway at the time. I’m certain the rock was thrown by someone on the bridge.”

“I contacted the police, who said they would be investigating it further.”

Our photos show the broken lorry’s windscreen and, above, the rock which was retrieved from Simon’s cab.
