Burnham-On-Sea runners complete ’emotional’ London Marathon

-

Three Burnham-On-Sea runners took part in an ’emotional’ period of silence at the London Marathon on Sunday (April 21st) to remember those who died in last week’s Boston Marathon bombings.

Sue Nicholls, Jason Vickers and Alison Salvador – all from Burnham Harriers Running Club – joined a 30-second period of silence at the start of Sunday’s marathon in memory of the US victims.

“It was really moving and emotional to join the silence and think back to the terrible events that happened last week,” Jason told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

All three Burnham runners completed the 26 mile run itself with Sue, 67, completing it in an impressive time of three hours and 40 minutes, helping her to win her age category.

Sue told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am really chuffed – it was a wonderful surprise to come first in the female 65-69 year-olds category with so many thousands of runners taking part in the whole marathon. It was my best-ever time and I really enjoyed it. I slowed down in the last six miles but I felt good.” Sue was also recently named the UK’s top female half-marathon runner in her age group.

Meanwhile, Jason Vickers completed Sunday’s marathon in a time of four hours and 55 minutes – and said he found it tough. “It was a really hot run and unfortunately my leg seized up half way round. I had some treatment to get going again and was pleased with my finishing time. I’ve decided that this is my last London Marathon – I’ll be concentrating on half marathons instead,” he said.

Alison Salvador, also pictured, completed her marathon in a time of four hours and 28 minutes which she was delighted with.

Jason has raised over £3,000 towards the Multiple Sclerosis Society by taking part in this year’s event. Alison was running for CLIC and Sue was running for Cancer Research.
