Councillors in Burnham have this week expressed concern about plans to build a new housing estate of 24 homes in the town.
Burnham-On-Sea.com revealed last month how house builder Persimmon has applied for full planning permission to build the properties on land besides 63 Links Gardens, off Berrow Road.
Members of the town council’s planning applications committee considered the proposals this week and gave them a cool reception.
Cllr Chris Williams said the proposals represent “massive over-development” and he questioned whether the design of the new homes, which include three-storey properties, would be in keeping with existing housing.
Cllr Ken Smout agreed: “Bearing in mind the high proportion of bungalows in that part of Burnham, we have to look carefully at whether the development would be in keeping.”
Cllr Williams said he also has concerns about the lack of public amenities at the site. “Besides a courtyard and some paths, there’s no mention here of any contribution of amenities. We want something back for the community, such as a children’s play area.”
The council also has concerns about the future of three badger setts at the site. The developer says it may have to apply for a licence from English Nature to have the animals moved.
The proposal is for the “erection of 24 dwellings and associated parking/garaging” behind the line of existing homes along Berrow Road. Residents have until 15th April 2008 to submit feedback regarding the scheme to Sedgemoor planners.
