Heatwave temperatures are expected to bring crowds of visitors to beaches in the Burnham-On-Sea area this weekend as new lifeguards go on duty for the first time.
The new RNLI beach lifeguards begin work in Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow today (Saturday) for the summer holiday season.
It comes as the Met Office predicts temperatures will soar to 24 degrees Centigrade (75F) on Sunday and 27c (81F) on Monday.
The RNLI is providing the new lifeguarding services at both Burnham and Berrow beaches to visitors and residents on behalf of Sedgemoor District Council.
“An RNLI beach unit is sited on Berrow Beach while the lifeguards at Burnham will share the jetty beach office on The Esplanade,” council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
She added: “Sedgemoor District Council have provided highly-trained lifeguards at Burnham-On-Sea for many years but this is the first time a lifeguard service has been offered at Berrow.”
Sedgemoor staff will continue to carry out other beach warden duties, as well as being trained to the Royal Life Saving Society ‘Beach Safety Wardens’ standard.
