Burnham-On-Sea town council has this week halted a supermarket’s cheeky attempt to promote its store on the same day that one of its rivals shut for the final time.
A long line of roadside signs promoting Lidl’s store were set up along Queen’s Drive, just yards away from Tesco and on the same day that Burnham’s Somerfield store shut for the final time.
But the supermarket’s promotional blitz back-fired when Burnham and Highbridge Town Council removed them.
A spokesperson explained to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We received several calls about the Queen’s Drive signs and they were removed as quickly as possible.”
“Our policy on this matter is that we do not allow commercial advertising signs to be installed along any public roads in the Burnham area.”
It came as the former Somerfield store on Burnham seafront closed this week after being taken over by Morrisons, as first reported here.
The supermarket is being given a make-over ahead of a major relaunch being planned for the summer.
