Burnham-On-Sea’s Lidl supermarket has re-opened today (Tuesday) after building inspectors declared it safe, a day after a vehicle crashed into the front of the store, forcing it to close.
Yesterday’s crash at Burnham-On-Sea’s Lidl store saw the driver of a Land Rover lose control in the supermarket’s car park in Oxford Street and then slam into the front of the building, causing damage to both the outside and inside of the store, as pictured here.
The store’s manager Chris Bonfield told Burnham-On-Sea.com this morning: “We’ve had building inspectors give it a full check over today and they have said it is structurally safe to re-open. We are now back open as usual and thank customers for their patience yesterday.”
No-one was hurt in Monday’s accident, but the damage to the store prompted it to be closed and staff to be sent home.
Eyewitness Dave Burrows told Burnham-On-Sea.com after Monday’s crash: “Several large glass panes were twisted and damaged, a wall was badly dented and the force of the collision left a lot of damage inside the store with debris over the floor.”
“The Lidl staff were clearly worried about the front of the store and stopped the customers inside leaving from the usual exit door – they had to leave by the entrance and the shop was quickly shut down.”
Burnham-On-Sea fire crews were called to the collision to ‘make safe’ the area. Crews cordoned off the front of the building with safety tape to keep pedestrians away.
