Dozens of volunteers have come forward to offer their help in running Highbridge’s closure-threatened library.
It comes after an appeal was published on Burnham-On-Sea.com last week amid fears by several town councillors that the library would not be a viable going concern without a big team of helpers.
Town council clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “The good news is that the majority of the volunteers who previously expressed an interested in helping the library are still keen to help us. We have about 27 people in all, which is a good number.”
The future of the library is due to be discussed again by the Town Council at its next meeting on Monday 4th July.
Following the confirmation from Somerset County Council that funding for the library will be withdrawn with effect from 1st October, the Town Council is negotiating a deal with the County Council to ensure a library service is maintained in Highbridge.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this month that councillors had expressed concerns about the viability of the library.
