Burnham and Highbridge Town Council has this week urged volunteers who have expressed an interest in helping run Highbridge Library to get in touch as negotiations to save the facilities from closure continue.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday (June 13th): “Following the confirmation from Somerset County Council that funding for Highbridge library will have its funding withdrawn with effect from 1st October, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council is endeavouring to take forward its effort to reach an agreement with the County Council to ensure that a library service is maintained in Highbridge.”
She added: “Full details of a draft service level agreement being drawn up by Somerset County Council are awaited, but in the meantime the Town Council is anxious to increase its database of potential volunteers to assist with the future running of the library.”
“Letters are being sent to all those people who came forward some time ago to update them on the current position, but any members of the public who are willing to assist with this project and who have not yet put their names forward are urged to contact the Town Clerk’s office at the earliest opportunity by telephoning 01278 788088.”
It comes after Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last week how councillors had expressed concerns about the viability of the library.
The matter is to be discussed again by the Town Council at its next meeting on Monday 4th July.
