Highbridge Liberal Democrats this week expressed their “utter outrage” this week after it emerged that plans for a £100million re-development of the town were nothing more than an ‘idea’.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last month how district councillor Paul Herbert and bosses from Property Link had unveiled extensive regeneration plans at a town council meeting.
But Highbridge councillor Joe Leach, who is leader of Sedgemoor’s Liberal Democrats, questioned the motives behind the scheme at a meeting of district councillors, where it emerged that the proposals were in fact just an “idea” rather than a firm proposal.
Cllr Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The people of Highbridge are eager for realistic development that will restore the town they all loved and remember. This is raising people’s hopes, just to be dashed again. They deserve better.”
And Tessa Munt, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, added: “I’m stunned and appalled to discover that the “£100m project” is nothing more than a pipedream. I think it’s disgraceful that such an announcement, heralded as the answer to Highbridge’s problems, should turn out to be an empty and cynical bit of electioneering.”
