Burnham-On-Sea BMX cyclist Liam Phillips has kicked off his Olympic year in style by claiming his fourth consecutive victory at the BMX Supercross World Cup in Manchester.
The 27-year-old led home a British one-two in the elite men’s event at the weekend ahead of team-mate Kyle Evans with Switzerland’s Renaud Blanc in third.
It marked a superb start to the year for Phillips, who had chosen to skip the opening World Cup event of the season in Argentina last month.
Phillips, the 2013 world champion, burst from the start-gate to lead from the front and just edge out Evans, whose second place marked the best World Cup result of his career.
Liam said: ”I can’t stress how hard that was – it was by far most challenging day of racing I’ve had in a very long time.”
“Some days you’ve got tough it out and try and make it to that last eight and once you do that it’s anybody’s game.”
“Every year becomes more difficult. I learnt a lot about myself, knowing that even when I’m not feeling the best I can still deliver when it matters.”
Liam has been an active member of Burnham-On-Sea BMX Club since the age of four and is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School.
