Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has congratulated the town’s BMX cyclist Liam Phillips, who became the first man to claim back-to-back titles after winning the BMX Supercross World Cup in the United States at the weekend.
The 26-year-old, who is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School, clinched the title over the weekend, as we reported here.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Michael Clarke told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Liam’s win is a great accomplishment – we are all very proud of him. He is a great asset for our town and we congratulate him on this super win.”
“It’s been an unforgettable season and I can’t thank those that support me enough,” said Liam, an active member of Burnham BMX Club since the age of four.
He won in Manchester, Sweden and Argentina and finished ahead of Dutchman Niek Kimmann, who picked up 735 points overall compared to Liam’s 865 points overall.
Liam – He represented Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics.
