Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has praised the town’s BMX cyclist Liam Phillips for ‘doing us proud’ in reaching the Olympics quarter-finals, despite his bid for a medal coming to an abrupt end after a crash on Thursday evening.
Liam suffered a heavy fall after initially making a great start in the first race of the quarter finals.
He was involved in a dramatic collision just after the first bend and was left dazed at the side of the cycling track.
After several minutes, he managed to get up and walk away, suffering from concussion. Three hours later, Liam tweeted: “I’m OK. Thanks for all the messages.”
The 27 year-old BMX cyclist – who is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School – had hoped to progress into Friday’s semi-finals.
Burnham and Highbride’s Mayor, Michael Clarke, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Liam has done us proud in representing Team GB at the Olympics.”
“It’s been a huge achievement to get there and I wish Liam a speedy recovery after his fall.”
A spokesperson for King Alfred School added: “We are gutted for Liam. We all know how hard he has worked to get to Rio 2016. We are all so proud of him.”
