Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has congratulated BMX rider Liam Phillips on being selected to ride for Great Britain at this summer’s Olympic Games.
As first reported here, the Burnham BMX rider has been chosen to take part in this summer’s Olympics despite breaking his collarbone last month.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Ken Smout, pictured below, said the news is “fantastic” for him and the town.
“I’m sure the whole of Burnham will be eagerly watching Liam and cheering him on this summer. To have gained a place on the team is a superb accomplishment and I congratulate him and wish him all the best,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Liam recently competed in the 2012 BMX World Championships in Birmingham where he became the second fastest man in the world during time trials – only to break his collarbone the following day.
He has since undergone surgery and has had his collarbone pinned, plated and screwed by a top surgeon.
Liam has been an active member of Burnham BMX Club since the age of four and is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School.
Liam was “over the moon” by the news on Wednesday and said he was “very proud” to be representing the country.
