Controversial proposals to build 51 new homes in Burnham-On-Sea have been recommended for approval despite dozens of objections from local residents – however a final decison on the scheme won’t be made this week after all.
Over 50 formal objections have been lodged by residents living near Lawrence Close, where Persimmon Homes wants to build a new housing development on open land next to the former Worston Road refuse tip.
The controversial plans have been rejected twice before by Sedgemoor District Council – initially when the application was for 69 homes in the summer of 2009, then for 53 homes in 2010.
Persimmon has submitted a third planning application to Sedgemoor District Council for 51 homes at the site and its latest plans were due to be considered by Sedgemoor’s Development Control Committee on Tuesday (May 24th).
“There are some last-minute discussions about drainage that need to happen before a decision can be made,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday.
“The scheme will probably now be on the agenda of the committee’s next meeting instead.”
A district council case officer recommended the plans are approved even though the Town Council’s Planning Applications Committee unanimously objected against the scheme when it considered the plans in March.
Cllr Peter Burridge Clayton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We supported the residents on the basis that the proposals would represent an over-development and be out of keeping with the surrounding area. There are also concerns about traffic parking, drainage and the risk of flooding.”
The scheme includes 11 two-bedroom homes, 29 three-bedroom houses and 11 four-bedroom houses, in addition to 88 car parking spaces.
