A group of community-minded residents in Highbridge who have launched a new police-backed Local Action Team to tackle problems in the town have this week been handed a funding boost.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last month how more than 20 local people, including police officers, had gathered in the town’s Morland Community Hall to form the new group, which will deal with problems including litter, dog fouling, traffic issues and anti-social behaviour.
Chris Fry, the Local Action Team (LAT) Co-ordinator for Avon and Somerset Constabulary, handed over a cheque for £250 on Thursday evening (August 7th) to help with the start-up costs of the group.
And more funding is on the way after Burnham and Highbridge Town Council agreed this week it would also give £250 towards the group.
“We are over the moon that the Town Council has decided to give us the grant to help us to help the children of Highbridge. We want to open a drop-in centre for the children to keep them off the streets. This takes a lot of money,” LAT Chairman Trish Hart told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The grant from the Town Council will also be paying for some two hour sessions twice a week with the sports centre. They will be coming out to the Morland Hall and giving the children fun.”
“The money from Chris Fry will go towards insurance, any barbecue costs we need to make, and the setting up and running of the drop-in centre,” she added.
“As well as money, this will take time. We will not be able to open the drop-in centre for the children this summer, unfortunately, as we are trying to get the insurance set up, so hopefully we will be able to open it up at half term.”
“We are also going to run a competition for the children to design a logo for the LAT so we will be spending money on gift vouchers etc for the winners.”
