The Town Council has approved plans to overhaul the Victorian drinking fountain in Seaview Road and the bandstand in the Manor Gardens ahead of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June.
The council looks set to spend over £2,000 on sprucing up the water fountain, pictured here. The work includes £1,020 to steam clean the stonework and carry out repairs to its base, plus £650 on replacing the lion’s head, £400 on a new jubilee plaque, and a further £575 on the fountain’s electrics.
Town councillors have also approved £900 of work for the bandstand in the Manor Gardens. The metalwork and roof will be repainted and repairs will be made to the lighting and electrics.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The work was scheduled to go ahead some time over the next year, but the Jubilee celebrations make it an ideal time to complete the work, delivering some lasting improvements for the town in years to come.”
The council was criticized earlier this month for spending £2,200 on 1,500 mugs to be distributed to every primary schoolchild in Burnham and Highbridge, as we first covered here.
Highbridge’s town clock is also being replaced as part of the Jubilee celebrations, as we recently featured here.
