A teenager from Burnham-On-Sea beat adult competitors from across the country to take second place at the British Land Yachting Championships held in Brean this weekend.
Craig George, 14, only took up the sport a year ago but performed incredibly well to finish the two-day beach event in second place behind British Champion Rhys Davies.
“Craig was understandably very pleased with his performance and everyone at the Brean Land Yacht Club is really chuffed for him,” club secretary Angela Hale told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “Craig did really well and this is by far his best ever result to date.”
Bitterly cold winds failed to discourage more than 30 land yachting enthusiasts from across the UK gathering on Brean beach for the British Land Yachting Championships, which were held on Saturday and Sunday.
Current British champion Rhys Davies, pictured right, won the standart races. Craig was second and third was Brean’s Martin Hale.
“Craig did really well and put me under a lot of pressure – he is a very good racer,” Rhys told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “It’s been a great weekend.”
In class 3, the top three were Steve Borrill, Jake Cookson and Tim Spears. And class 5 was won by Dave Green with the runners-up being Mark Fidley and Rob Collins. There was a rare dead heat in the mini competition, with Chris Wright and Ian Dibdon sharing the spoils while third was Martin Leach.
The two-day event was overseen by Brean Land Yacht Club which welcomes newcomers to the sport. A further regatta at Brean will be held in November.
