A stranded Land Rover had to be pulled to safety after getting stuck on notorious mudflats besides Brean Down on Saturday afternoon (November 1st).

The vehicle got into difficulty when owner Roger Proctor drove out almost half a mile from the shoreline while collecting fire wood along the base of the Down.

Mr Proctor, from Glastonbury, pictured right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I do feel silly for getting stuck but I’d walked out to check the state of the mud and was confident it was OK to drive on.”

“Unfortunately, the layer of hard sand on top of the surface gave way and the wheels of my Land Rover sank down to just below the axels. I couldn’t reverse or move the vehicle forward.”

Brean’s beach warden was alerted and Weston Recovery came to the motorist’s rescue by pulling the vehicle free – and charging him for the service.

There have been several vehicle rescues at the same spot in recent years. A Range Rover became stuck in April and a high performance vehicle also became stranded the same month.
