Shocked Highbridge couple escape early morning house blaze

-

Two people managed to escape unhurt from this Highbridge home in the early hours of today (Tuesday) after a huge fire.

Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea were called to Lakeside in Highbridge at 1.43am after receiving a call that the three-storey property was alight.

Two fire appliances from Burnham and Taunton initially attended the scene and a hydraulic platform and six firefighters with breathing apparatus were used to tackle the flames and halt the smoke issuing from the wall vents and roof.

At 2.09am the Officer in Charge added a further two pumps to the incident and crews with breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to tackle the fire.

At 2.40am, a fifth pump was called to the scene and a window on the second floor was smashed to help ventilate the home.

“The incident was brought fully under control at 3.58am and the cause of the fire is now under investigation,” a fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “There was damage to the contents, floors and walls by fire, heat and smoke.”

A neighbour at the scene told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The couple inside were understandably shocked, but otherwise unhurt.”
