An 11-year-old boy who rescued four kittens has this week been reunited with the tiny creatures during a visit to a wildlife centre near Burnham-On-Sea.
The youngster, Jamie Ursell, crawled through a hedge to rescue the kittens after spotting them discarded, crying and hungry, in long grass near Cossington.
His family alerted East Huntspill’s Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre, whose carers have been nursing the animals back to good health.
All four kittens have been found suitable homes but remain at the centre until they are weaned and old enough to start their new lives.
Jamie’s mum, Kim, who visited the centre this week with the youngster told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are really proud of Jamie for helping the kittens this way.”
“We are already thinking of ways we can help Secret World by organising our own fundraising event.”
Domestic animals are not usually taken in by the centre – only injured and orphaned wildlife.
However, on this occasion, it quickly became clear that professional intervention was needed to save the kittens.
Secret World is appealing for visitors to donate much-needed cat and dog food, kitchen roll and washing powder to help the 25 foxes, 35 badger cubs and 40 hedgehogs which they are caring for at the moment.
Supporters of Secret World are also being encouraged to visit the charity’s Open Weekend at New Road Farm in East Huntspill this weekend.
Charity founder Pauline Kidner said: “We are hoping visitors will come along with food donations when they visit us this weekend as we desperately need to keep costs down as we prepare for a busy winter with lots of hedgehogs.”
