Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge students recently celebrated World Book Day with a week of events.
Highbridge’s King Alfred School celebrated the national event across an entire week, putting on various activities, all in the hope of raising awareness of World Book Day and therefore students’ involvement in books and reading.
Students took part in various activities within tutor time across the week (a week which the school entitled World Book Week).
These events included book quizzes, book recommendations and other competitions.
Students were then able to take part in lunch time activities held in the school’s library. Such events included: reading musical chairs, library scavenger hunts, book tasting and a design your own book mark competition.
The school also tried to raise awareness by organising popup book sales in various locations at the school during break and lunch times across the entire week. The school also put Charlie and the Chocolate Factory type golden tickets up around the school for students to hunt throughout the week.
It also dropped reading mystery bags in obscure locations around the school. If students found these bags they could keep the objects concealed within them (books / stationery etc.).
The finale occurred on Friday were students and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters. Staff and students could then attend a fair which was held in the school’s hall at lunch time. Various stalls were organised for the fair.
These stalls included a cake sale, a book sale, lucky dip, soak the teacher (Miss Booth, Mr Hoskins, Mr Shepherd and Mrs Markoutsas getting soaked to the bone for a worthy cause), a raffle, sporting activities and more.
Throughout the week, the school managed to raise £80 which will be donated to the National Literacy Trust. This is a charity which helps raise children’s reading and writing ability across the UK. This is a significant figure considering most activities cost 10 or 20p to take part.
Miss Booth, the Literacy Coordinator at The King Alfred School, said: “There was a real buzz around the school because of the activities organised by the school. I have never seen so many students get so excited about books. It was truly wonderful to see.”
“We have a fantastically enthusiastic cohort of students and staff at our school who are more than willing to get involved in some kind of way, whether that is through partaking in activities or even organising them in the first place.”

Without their help, the week would not have been as successful as it was.”
