Dozens of children attended a special event in Highbridge on Thursday (October 14th) aimed at encouraging them to take part in out-of-school youth activities in the area.

The ‘Out Of School Convention’ at Highbridge’s King Alfred School was organised by staff and Burnham and Highbridge Police.

Groups in attendance included King Alfred ABC Boxing Club, Burnham Army Cadets, King Alfred Sports Centre, The Shed youth club, St John Ambulance, Highbridge Dreamscheme, Highbridge Youth Club, Family Connections, Air Cadets, Rural Youth Project, The Lighthouse Christian Youth Club, and Burnham Swim and Sports Academy.

PC Ian Bartlett, Burnham Police’s Schools Liason Officer, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Out of school clubs give young people an attitude of self-worth and self-esteem, building up their confidence which they retain in the classroom and carry forward into adulthood.”

“Participation in clubs during teenage years is linked to improved aspirations, teamwork, communication and social skills, as well as education development and physical wellbeing.”
