New-look Highbridge sports centre opens today after £45k makeover

-

A Highbridge sports centre has officially opened its new-look sports hall today (Wednesday, April 21st) following a £45,000 upgrade.

The main hall and adjacent rooms at King Alfred Sports Centre have been closed for several weeks while the project to modernise the facilities was completed.

The improvements include new floors, walls, a new-look balcony in the main hall, and a fresh lick of paint across the building.

Acting Manager Toni McKinlay told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s the first time the centre has had a new look since it was opened in 1977. We’re delighted with how it’s gone and are very pleased with the new look.”

The popular sports centre – which is run by Somerset Leisure Limited with staff from Somerset County Council – has more than 400 members on its books.

Sports which are regularly held there range from badminton and gymnastics to football and marshall arts.

The hall is used by students at King Alfred School in the daytime and the sports club’s members in the evenings. It is open to the general public.
