Burnham residents launch campaign for road safety changes

-

Concerned residents living in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea launched a campaign on Monday (June 30th) to get double yellow lines introduced a “dangerous” road junction where they claim “an accident is waiting to happen.”

Victor and Joyce Roberts, who are pictured above holding their petition, say vehicles often park down one side of Jubilee Street’s entrance onto Abingdon Street, hindering visibility and making the road a danger for pedestrians and motorists.

The couple addressed town councillors about the problem on Monday evening (June 30th) where they called for immediate improvements.

“We have double yellow lines along one side of the street, but the other side has a single yellow line where parking is allowed at certain times of the day. The restrictions are often ignored and vehicles are parked here all the time – which is why double yellow lines are better enforcement are urgently needed,” explained Mr Roberts.

“It’s very dangerous for pedestrians to cross in between parked vehicles and it’s also hazardous for vehicles travelling along a busy street. An accident is just waiting to happen.”

Mr Roberts later told Burnham-On-Sea.com that more than a dozen residents along the road have signed a petition calling for changes. The petition was only started after Monday evening’s council meeting. “This shows the strength of feeling there is for change,” said Mr Roberts.

Cllr Eric Gill, Chairman of the town council’s Town Improvements Committee, added that the council “fully supports” the residents and would be contacting Somerset County Council to ask for changes.

Town clerk Eileen Shaw cautioned, however, that the process of getting double lines introduced “is rarely a fast one, so residents may have to wait a while.”
