Spectators lined part of Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront to watch the town’s Jubilee Beacon being lit as part of a nationwide chain on Monday night (June 4th) – and there were similiar scenes on top of Brent Knoll, pictured above.
There were loud cheers as the beacon was lit opposite Burnham Sailing Club on the other side of the River Brue.
The beacon was lit at 10.15pm and spectators along the seafront were also able to see six other beacons around the Bristol Channel.
Burnham’s beacon was funded by the Town Council and was built by members of Burnham’s Hillview Carnival Club.
Burnham’s Mayor Ken Smout, Second Deputy Mayor Mike Mansfield and town councillor Neville Jones were among the 100-strong crowd of spectators.
A network of more than 2,600 beacons was lit by communities throughout the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
