Staff, parents and pupils at a Burnham-On-Sea school have this week been paying tributes to a popular teacher who has died.
John Henshaw joined St Andrew’s School as deputy head in 1978 and worked under three heads at the school until his retirement in 1997.
John’s passions were education and music, and he combined them brilliantly during his time at St Andrew’s, developing a strong musical culture at the school which still continues to this day.
After his retirement, he continued to work at the school for several years, providing musical enrichment for the children, and producing a sequence of memorable musical plays.
“The children were always very fond of Mr Henshaw. He was strict, but his lessons were always fun, and he built lasting relationships with generations of pupils,” headteacher Steve James told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday.
“He led the annual Year 6 school camp for many years and gave hours of his time for the benefit of the children.”
“Former pupils visiting the school never fail to enquire about him, and it will be with a great deal of sadness that we will have, in the future, to pass on the news of his early death.”
“The contribution he made to this school, and indeed to the wider musical life of Burnham and district, was immense, and the whole school has been saddened by this news.”
Mr Henshaw’s funeral will be held on 16th September at 2pm at Middlezoy Church.
