Tributes have this week been paid to a former Chairman of Burnham-On-Sea Neighbourhood Watch Association, who has died in a car crash.
John Chalmers lost control of his car after suffering a heart attack while at the wheel of his car in Wales and died.
Tributes have come in from friends and colleagues.
Chris Robertson, who worked alongside John at the former association, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I had the privilege of working closely with John on the Neighbourhood Watch Committee, as did many co-ordinators in the area.”
“John played a major part in developing Neighbourhood Watch in this part of the world, being on the Committee of several organisations within Sedgemoor and Somerset when Neighbourhood Watch and other safety issues were being promoted, and he gave a huge amount of his time, energy, knowledge, and experience to the cause.”
“He entered into some difficult negotiations as Chairman of the Burnham and area Neighbourhood Watch Association, and invariably won the day through his sheer determination and refusal to give up.”
“Although we had to wind up the Association, the fact that there are so many Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the area is due largely to the foundations put down by John and others, and for that we shall be ever grateful.”
