Highbridge councillor is selected as county council election candidate

-

Highbridge resident and local councillor Joe Leach has this week been chosen as the Liberal Democrat’s candidate for Somerset County Council’s elections in the Huntspill district.

Cllr Leach, pictured, was announced as the candidate for the June 2009 elections following a poll of local party members.

Cllr Leach, who is also leader of the Liberal Democrats group on Sedgemoor District Council, secured the nomination by a large majority.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am delighted to be selected as candidate for the Huntspill division.”

“I was educated here and have a lot of friends in the area. I will work as hard here as I do in Highbridge, and will give the people here a much deserved voice, which at the moment I feel is lost in the Conservative group at County Hall.”

Cllr Leach added that his work in Highbridge would continue alongside his county work should he be elected.

Cllr Leach has long campaigned with the county group to improve youth services, creating new methods of youth work and developing relations between age groups to reduce age discrimination. He regularly attends youth sessions and connects well with young people to better the services that are provided. He also takes a keen interest in recycling and public transport.

The Huntspill county council seat is currently held by Conservative Mark Healey, who was re-elected last election with a 688 vote majority. The full results were Conservatives 1955, Liberal Democrats 1267, Labour 1048.
