A group of Burnham-On-Sea fundraisers has raised hundreds of pounds for the Children’s Ward at Musgrove Park Hospital by taking part in a series of sponsored walks.
Mel Bax and Dre Laoutaris Dre have completed a four-day ‘Walk For Joe’ in memory of Joe Laoutaris, a 12 year-old who died of cancer in 2015.
They were joined along the route by family, friends and supporters, as pictured here.
It started with a walk along the England Coastal Path for two days, walking 9.7 miles from Porlock to Minehead and then 13.7 miles from Minehead to Kilve.
They also ran the Highbridge Parkrun on Saturday followed by a walk to the top of Brent Knoll in the afternoon before a further 18.7 miles on Sunday from Apex Park to Brean Fort and back, along the beach.
Mel Bax said: “I decided to do a bigger challenge this time as walking and running have really helped me since losing Joe, so Dre and I came up with the idea of walking part of the coastal path and visiting some of the places that Joe loved, places that are now very special to us.”
“We raised £350 during our walk but fundraising is ongoing throughout 2017 as our end goal is to raise enough money to refurbish the schoolroom on the Children’s Ward at Musgrove Park Hospital.”
She added: “We had a brilliant and very special four days of adventures and fantastic views as we were joined by family and friends along the way.”
“Overall we walked nearly 50 miles and completed over 107,000 steps – a fantastic achievement for Dre as he is only 11 years old.”
“Thank you to everyone who has walked with us, run with us, donated and supported us, including everyone at the Parkrun on Saturday.”
Their next beach walk for Joe is on Sunday 9th July from Apex Park to Brean beach and back.
