A Burnham-On-Sea pensioner who founded the town’s University of the Third Age over twenty years ago was featured on regional TV this week.
Joan Webb is a mere 89, is a founder member of Burnham’s U3A at the town’s Community Centre, and has been a member of the U3A table-tennis group ever since.
She wanted to tell the BBC Points West viewers about all the other U3A members who, like her, keep fit and active this way.
She says the group was delighted to be visited by BBC Radio Somerset and BBC Points West to feature Joan’s table tennis group.
Pat Nicholls, Chairman of Burnham-On-Sea U3A, said: “There are a wide range of activities available here, ranging from water-colour painting to singing, but with a membership of 600 and a choice of 50 groups there is something for everybody.”
“The U3A tagline is ‘Learn, laugh, and live’ with the emphasis on ‘laugh’.”
“It is not really a ‘university’ because no qualifications are needed to join; it is open to anybody who is retired or semi-retired.”
