Fundraisers across the Burnham-On-Sea area are rallying round to raise money for those affected by last week’s Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
Burnham Beavers and Cubs have this week presented a cheque for £490 to Shelterbox, an organisation that provides survival packs to victims of natural disasters, including the Japanese quake.
And Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club says there has been an “excellent response” to its collections at Sanders Garden World over the past week.
The club’s George Moon told Burnham-On-Sea.com that collections on Wednesday and Thursday had raised £700 alone.
“There has been an excellent response so far, and a further collection will be held on Tuesday (22nd March) specifically to fund the replenishment of Rotary Water Survival Boxes,” he said.
“These boxes have been produced by the Rotary Club and have already gone to Japan to enable disaster victims to have clean, drinkable water. The funds will also help to replace Rotary Shelterboxes already sent within hours of the disaster occurring.”
Burnham Beavers leader Mandy Williams explained that the youngsters had been pleased to be helping such a good cause.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Beavers and Cubs have raised the money over the past year from raffles and a scavenger hunt and had a visit from Shelterbox’s Clive Morris when the money was handed over. He explained that the boxes would hopefully be going to Japan and other troublespots around the world.”
Meanwhile, Burnham Rotary Club will also be re-opening its Rotary Bookshop in College Street, Burnham between 10am-4pm from Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th March to raise further cash for victims of the Japanese disaster.
