Burnham-On-Sea’s speedway team, the Somerset Rebels, has suffered a new injury blow after rider Jamie Smith sustained a broken leg as a result of an unfortunate accident during a match at King’s Lynn.
Having taken an excellent race victory in heat 12 to keep the Rebels within touching distance of the home side, 22-year-old Smith was completing a celebration lap, unaware that the tractor had taken to the track to grade it ready for the all important heat 13.
Despite taking evasive action, Jamie still collided with the grading mechanism of the tractor and was thrown awkwardly from his bike onto the track.
After lengthy attention by the paramedics, Jamie was taken to a local hospital where the full extent of the injuries was confirmed.
It would appear that it is a clean break of his left leg between the knee and the ankle, and he is waiting to undergo an operation on the leg.
“First Pavel, now Jamie,” said an understandably disappointed Jo Lawson. “Jamie was going great guns and now this happens to him.”
“Our first thoughts are obviously with Jamie and his family, especially his partner, Lucy, but now we will have to sit down a plan how we, as a club, are to deal with the situation.”
Speaking on Monday afternon (April 3rd), he said: “With Lucy expecting or first child any day now, I really wanted to get back home as soon as possible and after a check up by the doctors, I eventually returned home at 2pm.”
“It’s really good to be back home, although I cannot do much until I go back for my first check up next week when they will hopefully take the staples out.”
