Burnham-On-Sea man jailed after ‘violent struggle’ with police

-

A Burnham-On-Sea man who pleaded guilty to two offences of assault with intent to resist arrest and criminal damage has been jailed.

Shane Anthony Ponting, 32, from Winchester Road in Burnham, pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to 49 day’s jail at Taunton Deane Magistrates Court.

He was arrested at the end of August after a week on the run following a Crown Court issued warrant for his arrest for breaching conditions of a previous conviction.

Officers from the Burnham Police team arrested him in Highbridge following a “violent struggle” in which PC Tracey Stiles and Sergeant Ian Kennett were dragged down a flight of stairs.

Inspector Roger Tolley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is another example of local officers keeping the area safe and bringing offenders to justice.”

“The offender attempted to evade arrest and became violent and aggressive in the process.”

“We do not and will not tolerate this kind of behaviour towards officers or members of the public.”
