Burnham-On-Sea police station was the centre of attention when a jail break took place on Saturday (February 27th) – but it was all in aid of a Weston charity.

Eight teams of 24 people donned colourful costumes to take part in the event, for Weston Hospicecare, with the aim of getting as far away from Burnham as possible within a 24 hour period, without spending a single penny.

The event will see the volunteers beg, borrow and blag their way to raising as much money as possible for the charity.

Kerry Bastone, landlady at the Fox and Goose in Brent Knoll, is overseeing a team of waiting to make a break for it.

Kerry told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Everybody is very aware of the work of Weston Hospicecare and we have a collection on the bar that people are very happy to donate to. We have a £5,000 target which between ten of us should be achievable as we are already busy getting sponsorship and will be collecting on our way.”

The jailbreak is part of a campaign launched by the Hospice last year to coincide with its 20th anniversary. It is raising £160,000 to help with the cost of meeting the rise in demand for the services they provide to the community.

The blaggers from the Fox and Goose were eventually crowned the winners after travelling 801 miles in a minibus which they persuaded a friend to lend them.

The charity provides free palliative care to 1,000 people with life-limiting illnesses in North Somerset and neighbouring parts of Somerset.
