Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg may stand against Burnham-On-Sea’s MP Tessa Munt at the next General Election, according to a national newspaper report.
The Daily Mail‘s political columnist Quentin Letts has questioned how secure the Wells parliamentary seat is for Liberal Democrat Tessa Munt.
Mr Letts writes: “As a result of boundary changes, Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, who is currently next door in North East Somerset, may stand in Wells at the next election. Whereas Mrs Munt is almost laughably weak and windy in the Commons, Mr Rees-Mogg is the House’s best backbench performer.”
In 2010, the Conseratives narrowly lost the seat, which includes Burnham-On-Sea, when David Heathcoat-Amory was beaten by Tessa Munt by just 800 votes.
A Wells Conservatives spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Saturday that it is awaiting the outcome of a raft of changes to parliamentary boundaries across the UK from the Boundary Commission before selecting its candidate.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last year that the Boundary Commission’s changes could see the Wells constituency adding the Huntspills, Pawlett, Puriton, Woolavington, the Poldens, Shapwick, Ashcott, Westonzoyland, Middlezoy, North Petherton and the surrounding villages.
Rees-Mogg is rated as one of the Conservatives’ most rebellious MPs. Earlier this year, he said that Somerset should be on a different timezone to the rest of the UK, as we reported here.
