A nine-year-old Burnham-On-Sea boy has raised over £500 for a local hospital who cared for his late grandmother by holding a cake sale.
Jack Millier, who is a pupil at St Andrew’s School, held the well-attended fundraiser for the oncology unit at Weston Hospital on Wednesday, as previewed here.
The youngster was very passionate about the sale since his grandmother, whom he was very close to, sadly lost a long fight with cancer in February this year.
Scores of people attended Wednesday’s event despite heavy rain and gusty winds outside.
Jack’s mum, Rachel, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Jack and i would like to say a very big thank you to Burnham-On-Sea.com readers for their support for Jack’s cake sale.”
“Due to the horrendous weather we had to quickly clear all my lounge furniture and hold it all inside, which was very hectic, but well worth it.”
So far, Jack has raised £520 with the total still rising with money coming in from supporters in the Burnham area.
“We have spoken to the hospital and we are buying them trays for the patients to have their meals on, lots of pens, some mugs and glasses, and lots of microwavable wheat bags which they use to warm veins and make chemotherapy and blood tests less uncomfortable,” said Rachel.
“There will be a lots of money left over so we are giving it to the oncology unit directly as they have a charity pot of their own that they use to buy items as and when required.”
“This is great for them. If they don’t have this pot of money they have to go to a board at the hospital and apply for items using hospital funds which is very time consuming.”
Rachel added: “We had some great support from local businesses who donated prizes to the raffle. The Rosewood donated a meal for two with wine, Brean Bird Garden donated two family tickets, Asda donated a £10 giftcard, Morrisons gave a large chocolate cake and Lidl donated two bottles of wine.”
“Our biggest thanks go to local people and Burnham-On-Sea.com forum members who have been so kind and generous.”
“We had so many lovely cakes donated, people have been posting notes with donations through the door, we had a very kind lady come and do balloon animals for the children and another member let us borrow their gazebo.”
“Most importantly, thank you to everyone that came as we wouldn’t have raised so much without your support!”
