Almost 100 new jobs look set to be created after a Highbridge company was this week given the go-ahead for a major expansion.
As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here in April, Isleport Foods submitted a formal planning application to Sedgemoor District Council to expand its factory on the Isleport Business Park. The plans have this week been approved.
Bakkavor, the Icelandic fresh food manufacturer which owns the site, said it needs the extra space to fulfill rising orders and wants to construct two extensions to its facilities which may create 92 new jobs.
The new jobs would be created across four departments: goods in and low risk, high risk, packing and despatch and office.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Michael Clarke welcomed the news this week. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is superb news that will give the Burnham and Highbridge area a real boost.”
In its planning, design and access statement for Bakkavör, consultancy firm RPS Group said the extension to the main unit alone would increase factory space by 1,200 square metres while a proposed goods-in extension would cover 690 square metres.
“In recent years, the existing facility has outgrown its capacity and operational efficiency requirements. So improvements are required to the existing buildings in order to provide for the growing levels of demand and necessary output,” it says.
