Impact of M5 closures in Somerset raised in Parliament by Burnham-On-Sea MP

-

The impacts of closing the M5 motorway through Somerset as been raised in Parliament by Burnham-On-Sea’s MP Ashley Fox.

The MP called for a parliamentary debate on the increasing frequency and duration of M5 motorway closures in the county, highlighting their impact on local businesses and residents.

He said in the House of Commons: “The M5 motorway in Somerset is being closed ever more frequently and for longer durations.”

In response, the Leader of the House, Lucy Powell MP, acknowledged the serious disruption caused by road closures and the frustration they create for communities.

She agreed that poorly planned roadworks and National Highways’ approach to closures can have a significant impact: “I know absolutely how frustrating these kinds of road closures can be for constituents and others travelling.”

“Poorly planned roadworks and Highways Agency plans can be very devastating. I will support him in getting these issues raised with ministers and hopefully in the House as well.”

Burnham’s MP said he welcomed the Leader of the House’s support and looks forward to a full debate on how motorway closures are managed and the impact they have on local residents.
