Safety warning issued by fire brigade as cold snap continues

-

Continuing icy weather has frozen lakes, rivers and ponds across the Burnham-On-Sea area, prompting a safety warning from Somerset fire brigade.

These were the scenes at Apex Park in Highbridge on Monday (January 4th) as temperatures sank to minus 7 degrees Centigrade overnight.

Dog owners and parents of children have been advised to take special care during the cold spell.

Service Specialist Rescue Advisor Matt Johnson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I would like to warn dog owners and parents to take extra care during this cold weather to prevent their pets and children going onto frozen water.”

“Although ice may look thick and strong, it may not bear even a light weight and people often under-estimate how quickly very cold water will kill.”

“People should also be warned not to enter water to rescue their pets as cold water incapacitates instantly and the cold temperature quickly paralyses even the strongest of swimmers.”
