Burnham’s In Charley’s Memory holds ‘lads and dads’ activity day

-

A Burnham-On-Sea charity that delivers mental health support to young people in memory of a local teenager who took his own life has held its first ‘lads and dads’ day this month.

In Charley’s Memory was set up after Charley Marks, 18, took his own life in September 2014, and the charity supports young people and those affected by mental health.

On Saturday (11th February) the charity held its first ‘Lads and Dads’ event at Wall Eden Farm in East Huntspill. Jointly funded by Sedgemoor District Council and Somerset Skills and Learning, the event saw participants try out air rifle shooting, archery and axe throwing.

Joanna Burridge, head of counselling and services at In Charley’s Memory, explained: “Being active, learning new skills and connecting with other people are all things that can help keep us well and improve our self-esteem and confidence.”

“This is especially the case for men who may be less likely to talk about their problems. So we really enjoyed working with the team at Wall Eden Farm on this challenge day.”

Meanwhile, Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar has raised £3,351.48 during its latest Charities Week. The funds will enable the charity to continue developing its work and services throughout Somerset.
